Chatsworth House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, is one of the wonders of the Peak District. It is a treasure house richly endowed with fine paintings, sculptures, furniture, porcelain, carvings and tapestries. There are walls and ceilings splendidly painted by Laguerre and Verrio. Much of the present house was built by the 1st and 6th Dukes. Great changes in the gardens were made at the time of the 4th Duke's reconstruction, mostly modelled under the direction of 'Capability Brown'. Chatsworth is noted for its fountains, with the Emperor Fountain designed by Sir Joseph Paxton. The Great Cascade was built in 1694 and enlarged in 1702. The water is supplied by a lake specially built for the purpose on the hill behind the house. |
