Peak District National Park
Chrome Hill, Derbyshire

Back to Landscape Heritage Card Page

The area of valleys and hill slopes in the vicinity of the Upper Dove is a geological meeting place of sandstone, shale and limestone. There are a number of sharply pointed hills rising above the River Dove on the edge of the limestone plateau; such as Hollins Hill, Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. The latter two hills are composed of reef limestone and have particularly impressive profiles.

The Staffordshire village of Hollinsclough lies at the foot of Chrome Hill, and is a delightful community of rural calm. There are a number of mellow stone houses, a school and an attractive village hall. Look for the tiny Victorian letter box set in a nearby barn wall.
