Hart Crag, Fairfield Horseshoe

Back to Landscape Heritage Card Page

This mountain excursion of 11 miles (17.6 km) requires a full day. From Ambleside the route leaves the delightful wooded valley of Scandale Beck, climbs up to Low Pike, and ascends steadily amongst the rocks to High Pike. The path then follows the wall along the ridge to Dove Crag, and continues ahead up the stony side of Hart Crag. Beyond the col, there is a steep approach to Fairfield's wide plateau and summit, 2863 ft. (873 m); for a magnificent panorama of mountains and deep valleys. The route heads due south along the grassy ridge to Great Rigg, and proceeds as an undulating way to Heron Pike. The final stage is a steep descent from Nab Scar, and a pleasant return to Ambleside through Rydal Park.
