The Caldon Canal and the Leek Canal join together near Denford. Work started on the Leek branch after Rudyard Reservoir was completed. Shortly after 1801 the Leek Canal was opened for traffic, as well as bringing water via the feeder from Rudyard. The staircase, three-rise lock at Hazlehurst built by Henshall, was noted for its traffic congestion and wasteful use of water.

In 1841, three new locks were built, and this involved diverting the Caldon Canal to part of its original line, and the construction of a brick aqueduct. This allowed the Caldon Canal to pass under the Leek Canal, where the latter waterway was already carried over Endon Brook.
