Peak District National Park
Hen Cloud, The Roaches, Staffordshire Moorlands

Back to Landscape Heritage Card Page

Hen Cloud, 1345ft (410m), rises as a detached hill summit at the southern end of the main escarpment ridge of The Roaches.

The Roaches and Hen Cloud were once part of the Swytharnley Estate. Sir Philip was the last Brocklehurst of Swythamley Hall, whose brother Capt. C.H. Brocklehurst, had been a game-warden in the Sudan. He established a private zoo on The Roaches and Hen Cloud, which included llama, yak and wallabies. The latter thrived in the moorland habitat from the 1930's, and descendants still existed in the area until very recent times.

The estate was sold in 1977, and purchased in 1980 by the Peak Park Planning Board. From the rocky crest of The Roaches there is a clear view of Tittesworth Reservoir.
