Loweswater and Low Fell, Buttermere

Back to Landscape Heritage Card Page

Quiet Loweswater lies to the north-west of the main Buttermere valley. The lake, which contains perch, pike and trout, is owned by the National Trust. Holme Wood forms a colourful background, and a wide path follows the southern shore amongst mature and beautiful trees. Above the lake, a fine walk terraces along the edge of the wood, and close by Holme Force is a lovely series of waterfalls in a leafy setting.

The smooth slopes of Low Fell rise to a ridge with a number of minor summits. From the south top there is a magnificent view of the Buttermere valley - a perfect arrangement of lakes and mountains. There is the towering bulk of Grasmoor, and the isolated, austere outline of Melbreak, with its steep flank above Crummock Water. Beyond, lies the impressive ridge of the High Stile range; a rugged territory of volcanic rock, a scene of crags, buttresses and rocky hollows - one of Lakeland's finest mountain walks.
