The red squirrel was once common in English broad-leaved woods, but this attractive animal has been largely displaced in many parts of the country by the introduced grey squirrel. The red squirrel is most abundant in pine forests and conifer plantations, where the preferred food is pine seeds, which it is well adapted to extract from their woody cones. Due to careful conservation numbers of red squirrels have risen in Scotland, and in other areas, including Wales, the Lake District, Northumberland and on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour. |
