Peak District National Park
The Roaches to Tittesworth, Staffordshire Moorlands

Back to Landscape Heritage Card Page

From the rocky crest of The Roaches there is a clear view of Tittesworth Reservoir. The original dam at Tittesworth was constructed in 1858 to supply water to the local textile and cloth dyeing industry of Leek. Tittesworth Reservoir was increased to its present size between 1959 and 1963, when the new dam was built to supply drinking water to Leek and the Potteries. It is fed by the River Churnet and other smaller watercourses in this upper part of the Churnet Valley. At the same time a treatment works was built to clean the water. At Tittesworth there is a Visitor Centre, picnic areas, bird watching and fishing facilities, along with popular walking routes.

The boundary of the Peak District National Park runs along the Meerbrook to Blackshaw Moor road.
