Wasdale, near Santon Bridge

Back to Landscape Heritage Card Page

Beyond the patches of woodland lies Wast Water, England's deepest lake, 258 ft. (78.6 m). The mountain panorama includes Yewbarrow, Great Gable, Lingmell and the Wastwater Screes. From the north shore of the lake, a path follows Nether Beck towards Scoat Fell and Haycock. The stream passes through deep rocky clefts forming a number of waterfalls. Higher up this valley, Scoat Tarn is a gem in its wild mountain setting. Below the Wastwater Screes, the lakeside path has one awkward section of tumbled boulders. The grassy ridge path from Whin Rigg to Illgill Head affords dramatic high-level views of Wast Water and Wasdale Head.
