Watendlath

Back to Landscape Heritage Card Page

The Borrowdale area is one of the loveliest in Lakeland. Colourful fellsides sweep down to the lake, and a dark girdle of rugged crags is softened by a magnificent canopy of trees. All these charms combine to create a noble environment ofmountain beauty. A narrow road to Watendlath climbs through woods with many surprise views across Derwent Water. The hamlet of Watendlath was the setting for Sir Hugh Walpole's novel, Judith Paris; Judith's house stands close by the tarn. This small settlement is also the starting point for a number of pleasant walks; to High Seat, for magnificent views of the Helvellyn range; to Rosthwaite in Borrowdale, to lovely Dock Tarn, and to Brund Fell and King's How.
