Izaak Walton, born in 1593, wrote the famous classic 'The Compleat Angler'. Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale form the heart of the fishing country shared by him and his friend Charles Cotton who lived at nearby Beresford Hall. Charles Cotton added chapters to Walton's book in 1676.

The riverside path on the Derbyshire bank of the Dove continues south from Beresford Dale. The beauty of the river's course is complimented by its steep valley slopes, with outcrops of limestone, rock screes and a light cover of trees. From the rocky crest of The Roaches there is a clear view of Tittesworth Reservoir.
